Body Mass Index

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measurement of height versus weight (BMI = kg/m2). It is a very reliable indicator of weight vs. height. It may not be accurate in some patients (i.e. athletes), because it does not take into account bone structure or large muscle mass. A BMI between 19 and 24 is considered ideal. This range (determined by insurance companies) is the weight at which people are considered the healthiest.

BMI Range Meaning
Under 19 Underweight
Between 19 and 24 Ideal
Between 25 and 29 Overweight
Between 30 and 39 Obese
Between 40 and 49 Morbid Obesity
Over 50 Super-Morbid Obesity
